Acai Berry – What Are The Health Benefits?

Posted on March 25, 2013 by Ollie 'Ojay' Matthews There have been 0 comments

The chances are that you have all heard of the so called bunch of fruits called ‘super foods’ and no this does not simply mean they have been transported to earth from Krypton during a meteor shower and wear blue and red lycra! These are foods with high levels of antioxidants and benefits to your health if added to your diet.

Previously we have been told of things such as wine containing anthocyanins which is in short an antioxidant flavonoid that gives red grapes the deep red colour that we see. The problem with the wine is the detrimental effects that alcohol can have on your system (see my previous article on alcohol and effecting your gains). One way of still getting the high levels of antioxidants is through a berry found in the Amazon on the Acai tree, it can actually provide over 30 times the anthocyanins that red wine can provide and also lots of essential fatty acids just like olive oil, all encased in a really good tasting berry.

What other benefits can consuming acai berrys have on your health and fitness then along with the antioxidants?

The high levels of essential fatty acids found in the acai berry can aid lowering of the LDL (bad) cholesterol levels and help increase HDL (good) cholesterol levels. They also help to reduce the chances of heart disease and increase recovery rates in muscles from intense exercise.  These omegas can help lower your bodyfat levels which can’t be bad.

So, fatty acids, antioxidants, anything else? Let us look at the levels of vitamins included in acai berrys too...

Vitamin A – Required for healthy growth, development, immunity, healthy vision, hair, skin, bones, nails.

Vitamin B – Responsible for metabolising energy in the body helping aid the conversion of glucose from carbohydrates.

Vitamin C – helps boost the bodies production of collagen necessary for healthy cartilage formation and repairs within the body. Acai berrys actually have as much vitamin C as blueberries which are one of the highest fruits out there.

Vitamin E – a very powerful antioxidant itself, it neutralises free radicals and contributes to a healthy circulatory system speeding up the healing of wounds.

Acai berrys also contain a high level of amino acids.

Also included alongside all these vitamins and antioxidants are the added benefits of minerals.

High levels of potassium – required for healthy growth, building muscles, aiding nerve impulses, lowering blood pressure and reducing muscle pain.

Copper – formation of red blood cells, aiding the healthy maintenance of the nervous system and skeletal system.

Manganese – brain function and production of some enzymes.  Deficiency in manganese can result in blood sugar issues alongside joint pain and bad memory.

Calcium – Required to maintain healthy bone mineral density

So to sum up acai berries and their inclusion as a superfood:-

  • Heart Benefits
  • Cardiovascular benefits
  • Digestive benefits – through fibre preventing build up of toxicity in your colon.
  • Healthy sleep – through the mineral and vitamin B content.
  • More energy
  • Strengthened immune system
  • Higher alertness levels
  • Muscle benefits through growth and recovery.
  • Anti-ageing.

You can find acai berries in juice form but I would recommend supplementing due to convenience. Bodybuilding Warehouse Acai Berry Tabs are just £13 for a months supply.

As always if you would like any tailored training plans, specific to needs or diet requirements, fat loss, muscle gain, dairy free, gluten free and anything else give me a shout and we will be able to work something out specific to yourselves!
