Does Green Tea Burn Fat?

We decided to check out exactly what Green Tea does and if it really does burn that fat off...

‘The entire British empire was built on cups of green tea…’

Well, not quite Green Tea but we can pretend! You’ve no doubt heard people talking about green tea and its health benefits and fat loss properties, but how much of this is true? Does it actually assist in getting you towards your goals?

Let us look at what green tea actually is. Made from leaves originating from the camellia sinesis plant that have undergone minimal oxidation during the processing stages. It started off it’s life in China more than 4000 years ago, and most Asian cultures have become associated with this tea leaf. The leaf gets its health benefits from the high amounts of flavonoids included in it which are known for their antioxidant properties. Alongside these flavonoids, the green tea leaf contains high amounts of amino acids, different enzymes, lipids, sterols, carotenoids, vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals and a small amount of caffeine.

The way that green tea can help burn fat is down to the way the body synthesises its food in the liver and small intestine through a substance known as triglyceride. Triglyceride is used for energy for life support and other physical activities however, when there is too much triglyceride available it is turned to fat and then we see conditions such as obesity. When we drink green tea, because of the high amounts of polyphenols these actually activate an enzyme that controls the breakdown of excess triglyceride, therefore in theory this is the reason that green tea is a great fat loss aid.

Green tea also contains antioxidants called catechin polyphenols which hold responsibility for lots of the actual health benefits of green tea; in particular epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG for those like myself that actually had to use an online dictionary to spell that!) which has actually been found to stimulate our metabolisms and therefore accelerate weight loss similar to the way caffeine does. Although it is similar to the way caffeine stimulates fat loss, studies have shown that it is a lot more effective that just caffeine alone.

How much green tea should you take? Well, you can have as many cups a day as you like, however some people are not a fan of the taste which is where supplementation comes in. Bodybuilding Warehouse Green Tea capsules can be an easier method if you aren't a lover of the taste. Studies have shown around 750-1000mg have been effective per day in getting the relevant losses.
