We're big lovers of Sweet Potato here at Bodybuilding Warehouse and it's nutritional value is just an added bonus. We thought we would share exactly why they're so good for you and a couple of great sweet potato recipes for you to try out yourself.
You may think that because Sweet Potato is a carb that it's bad for you and full of bad fats but the fact is that Sweet Potato are the good guys of the carb world! As with everything, moderation is key but you can certainly eat sweet potato without feeling too guilty at all about it! The sweet potato is packed with vitamins that contribute to your health in various different ways which is why we have provided some sweet potato recipes. A few of these benefits are:
✔ They are a great source of Magnesium which is a vital vitamin within the body's system helping organs such as the heart along with your blood, muscles and nervous system.
✔ The sugars within Sweet Potato are slow releasing meaning that they're slowly released into your blood stream. This limits blood sugar spikes and it a good reliable source of energy that will stay with you a lot longer.
✔ They are packed with Vitamin D which is a huge help especially during the winter period. Vitamin D is something that is made within our bodies when we are getting a good amount of sunlight. It has been linked to our energy levels and our mood which is why a lot of people will suffer from seasonal affective disorder during the winter months as our body then isn't producing this Vitamin.
Here are a few of Sweet Potato Recipes we wanted to share with you.
Steak stuffed Sweet Potato:
This big, hearty meal certainly isn't for the faint hearted. Caution: After getting your teeth around this, you’ll never look at a sweet potato in the same way again;
What you need:

✔ Firstly, you need to pre-heat your oven to 425 degrees (Gas Mark 7)
✔ Begin to prick the Sweet Potato and place in the oven for around 45-60 minutes depending on the size. (the bigger the potato the longer it might need)
✔ While that's in the oven, you can begin to prepare your steak. Do this by cutting it into small pieces and adding all of the seasoning above.
✔ Mix 1TBSP of BBQ sauce on to the steak.
✔ Set a skillet on medium heat with your coconut oil.
✔ Add steak and when it's almost done, add another tbsp of BBQ sauce.
✔ Turn off when the meat is cooked to your liking.
✔ You can now remove the sweet potato from the oven.
✔ You can now top the Sweet Potato with your tasty steak!
You can consume this meal post workout for a protein packed, man sized, bulk!
Sweet Potato Chips
This Sweet Potato Chips recipe is the perfect way to mix up your carb intake without feeling guilty!
What to do:
✔ First up weigh out your Sweet Potato to your own dietary requirements for the evening or the following day. Then chop the sweet potato into wedges, chips, discs or cubes.
✔ Add some 1 cal spray or 10ml – 15ml of Good Oil into a bowl (remember the fat content of the Good Oil) then add the sweet potato chips into the bowl and mix them around so they’re evenly coated.
✔ Add the spices and herbs of your choice, two of our favourites are cayenne pepper and chilli flakes or sea salt, pepper and thyme.
✔ Begin to mix the sweet potatoes in the bowl so they’re evenly coated in the spices and herbs.
✔ Pop them onto a baking tray and into the oven on 200°C - if you make thin wedges you’ll want to leave them in there for 30-40 minutes, thin chips should take around 30 minutes and discs and cubes should take 20 – 25 minutes.
✔ Turn over your wedges half way through to ensure they’re cooked evenly.
We may have left the best until last - these are awesome! You can try these tasty fiery burgers that can be served along side greek yoghurt and spinach if preferred.
What you need:
✔ 500G of Turkey Thigh Mince
✔ 1 Clove of Garlic (crushed)
✔ 1 Large Egg (beaten)
✔ 1 Chipotle Chilli in Adobo (chopped)
✔ 1TSP of Tabasco Chipotle Sauce
✔ 1 Lime (juice only)
✔ 2TBSP of Fresh Coriander (chopped)
✔ 1TSP of Paprika
✔ 1/2 TSP of Ground Cumin
✔ A Pinch of Salt and Pepper
✔ 1 Large Sweet Potato
✔ Coconut Oil
What to do:
✔ Firstly, grab a glass bowl and add the turkey mince! Now fold in all the other ingredients, until well mixed.
✔ Once this is mixed, split into 6 portions and refrigerate for around 20 minutes.
✔ Whilst your healthy chipotle turkey burgers are chilling, begin to slice your sweet potato (skin on) into disks large enough to cover your burgers. The disks should be about the same thickness as two stacked pound coins.
✔ You can now use your Bodybuilding Warehouse Coconut Oil over your disks and heat your griddle pan. Once your pan is hot, you can add your sweet potatoes and griddle for around 6 to 10 minutes each side.
✔ Add 1 table spoon of coconut oil to a non stick frying pan. Over a medium heat, cook the burgers for 10 mins on each side or until golden on both sides.
✔ You can now place a burger between two sweet potato disks, add some sliced cucumber, lettuce and a tomato. Now serve! You can serve along side Greek Yogurt and spinach if preferred.
