As soon as people hear the word ‘fat’ they more than likely think of all the food that contains high levels of bad fats and because of this – they avoid it like the plague. The truth is, not all fats are bad for you!
Good and Bad Fats
There are healthy fats that are actually very good for you and help you massively in the bid to shred that stubborn fat! Fats also play vital roles within the body so it’s extremely important that people don’t cut them out of their diet completely but we will go through those a little later.
First of all. fat is a natural substance which is made up of different fatty acids. There are four main groups of fatty acids and these are saturated, monounsaturated, trans and polyunsaturated. The fats in the different groups because they have a different chemical structure to one another, thus making some healthier than others and some ‘good’ fats and others ‘bad’ fats. Fat is an essential part of our diet however too much of it can be detrimental to our health.
What are bad fats?
Bad fats are, quite simply, the fat’s that have a negative effect on your health. They can raise your cholesterol and in the long-term also increase your risk of heart disease. The worst types of fat that you can consume is trans fat and saturated fat as they both contain a high calorie content and when calories go unused they can then be stored by the body as fat, thus leading to weight gain. There are quite a variety of different foods that can contain these bad fats and which are best to keep away from, these can include:
✔ Commercially-baked goods such as cookies, cakes, pizza’s etc.
✔ Packaged snack food such as crisps and sweets,
✔ Fried foods such as French fries, chicken nuggets etc.
What are good fats?
Good fats are the fats that when eaten within a healthy diet can vastly improve your health and well-being. These kind of fats are naturally occurring in the foods that we eat and aren't manufactured in there. There are certain vitamins which are actually known as ‘fat-soluble’ – this basically means that they need the fat to be able to be absorbed and then stored. A few of these are Vitamins such as Vitamin A, D, E and K. All of these are an essential part of everyone diet for a variety of different reasons. This means that fat is also essential as without the fat in your body, you wouldn’t be able to absorb them correctly. Your body would then become deficient in these vital Vitamins and begin effecting other areas of your body.
✔ Lastly, a fourth reason as to why fat is such an essential part of everyone’s diet is its ability to protect your body. As well as the previous layer of fat found just beneath the skin keeping you warm, your body also has a layer of fat which surrounds your major organs such as the brain, nerves, heart, tissues and also your bones. This layer of fat will act like a cushion for these organs and if your body ever comes under an experience of sudden impact, this layer is designed to absorb as much of the shock as possible before it can get to important organs such as the heart.
As important as fat is within the body, you can still have too much of it. You can still want to burn fat and become leaner and be healthy. A combination of hard
